Friends of Historic Johns Hopkins House

Welcome!
Welcome to our website! We are a new 501(c)(3) nonprofit set up to support the purchase and then restoration of Whites Hall, the birthplace and boyhood home of Johns Hopkins, located in Gambrills, Maryland. Our focus was on advocating for Anne Arundel County to purchase the property. We engaged in a mailing/emailing campaign to let the County Executive know that the community is passionate about saving this very historic site.  Unfortunately, we were not successful.  AACO will NOT be purchasing the property. So now, we are moving to plan B. We will be attempting to raise the funds to purchase and then restore the house and property. Check out the "How to Help" tab at the top of the page. This website will be full of valuable information, but many of the pages continue to be updated.

There is no question in my mind that the Johns Hopkins birthplace site is one of the most significant, historically important unprotected sites not only in Anne Arundel County but in the State of Maryland. The impact he had in helping create one of the world’s premier medical and academic institutions is remarkable. Additionally the example his family set in the 18th century in dealing with the institution of slavery and their support of the Union cause in the 19th century is  also significant. The opportunity to preserve this site for future generations to learn about our American history is something that we must accomplish. We will never have another opportunity quite like this in the Crofton community. We simply must preserve this special place.                                                                                                                                                      ----Jim Lighthizer                                                                                                                                                                                                  Former County Executive

As a former elected official and a supporter of the Johns Hopkins House, I am very pleased about the renewed effort to save this important structure.    Under this new and energized leadership team, I am confident that we can restore the building and recognize the philanthropic efforts of Mr. Hopkins which has had a positive effect on our world.    I encourage all to help support this effort.

It is PERFECT open space land in the route 3 corridor that absolutely needs  restoration, preservation and conservation for 1001 reasons.......as an ex history teacher who has a passion for understanding our areas' pre 1964 history I can think of a million and one school projects for our children to complete to learn about this property and it’s history.
